Ballyglunin Train Station Visit - 21/09/2023

5th Class were invited to visit the local train station at Ballyglunin. The station at Ballyglunin has been extensively renovated in recent years and it currently houses a fully working model train set. This train set is a copy of Ballyglunin Train Station in its heyday and includes the waiting room, the platform, the footbridge and storage shed.

The children learned a lot about the history attached to Ballyglunin Train Station - most famously the use of the train station for the filming of 'The Quiet Man' in 1951. The boys and girls even watched a short clip of the film during their visit to the train station. They were amazed to notice that the room where they were watching the clip of the film featured in the movie.

                                         Cycle Safe - September 2023

The boys and girls in Fifth class have been learning all about safe cycling with Richard and Natasha from Cycle Safe Ireland. All the children are well able to cycle but have been put through their paces regarding setting up their bicycles and helmets safely, accelerating and braking carefully, signalling and learning how to safely turn left and right at a junction.

We also completed an indoor theory session where the children explored some basic rules of the road, what dangers to look out for while out cycling. what personal protective equipment they should wear and the dangers of cycling without a helmet.

Have a look at some pictures from one of our outdoor sessions. You might recognise some faces.

Marathon Challenge

The wonderful boys and girls in Mr Kennedy's 5th class have started a marathon challenge. This is an 8 week challenge where we build up the distance daily starting at 600m a day and finishing at over 2km per day.

We researched that the distance of a marathon is 42.20 km. We used the measure app on the school ipads to go out and measure what one full lap of the school astro pitch - we measured it at 100m.

Our fitness is really improving as we complete the Marathon Challenge.

 St. Brigid's Day Art

To celebrate St. Brigid's day, Mr Kennedy organised rushes to be delivered to the classroom. We then used these rushes to make our St Brigid's crosses. Everyone got a chance to make their own cross and take one home - some even made a second cross for their grandparents.

It is said that by hanging a St Brigid cross inside the back door of your house, it will help to keep out fire and evil.

 Dance in PE

As part of the 5th Class PE Curriculum, the boys and girls have been taking part in a weekly Dance session with our visiting dance teacher. Everyone is really enjoying it.

 Christmas Art

Before the cold weather of December 2022, we went on a walk to Monivea Woods and picked up some twigs or small/thin branches. We then used elastic bands and cord to weave a star decoration to be hung on our Christmas trees at home or anywhere around the home as a Christmas decoration.
